Molybdenum prime function is for the metabolism of nitrogen and is necessary for the fixation of nitrogen by nitrogen-fixing bacteria.

The enzyme reductase contains this element, and shortage of this element leads to an accumulation of nitrate in leaves and a reduction in protein synthesis.

Deficiency causes a chlorosis in the form of spotting, mottling, or a general yellowing. in leguminous plants the nitrogen-fixing bacteria may fail to develop, resulting in typical nitrogen deficiency.
